Can We Look Young Forever With The Right Diet?

ree

My gut lining is my life force and I certainly treat it that way. Having a healthy gut microbiome will undoubtedly give you healthy skin. Eating the right foods will provide clear skin that shines and portrays how young you feel inside on the outside. And at the tender age of 41, I feel I should start treating my skin with the same respect I treat my gut lining.

Our body is composed of different organs that perform together to make complex systems work to keep us alive and thriving. You might not think of it in this way but your skin is the largest organ in your body and like your gut it harbors or hosts a diverse number of microorganisms which are beneficial to us. The most known role of the skin is to provide a physical barrier. As the outermost part of us it serves as an interface between “us” and the rest of the world. These organisms that include bacteria, fungi, viruses and mites perform vital functions that our personal human genome has not evolved. They also educate T Cells (part of your immune system) to respond in a similar way to other pathogens.

Your skin is in general acidic in nature and in a constant state of renewal. It takes cells 4 weeks to make it from the very bottom layer to shedding, and depending on location your skin can have very distinct habitats.

As I look back at my life I realize I haven’t always catered to the health of my gut. I indulged in unhealthy sunlight exposure practices, high sugar diets, starvation diets, alcohol use, and even smoking. Therefore, I recognize that my age will be reflected on my skin the quickest and/or the easiest. Slowly but surely I have researched several methods that are available now a days to address this.

I have approached taking care of my skin the same way I do everything else. I look for things that I can do to encourage my body to do what it is supposed to do. Face peels, microneedling, lymphatic massages, and acupuncture are only a few of the practices and techniques used to encourage a healthier skin tone and reduction of wrinkles otherwise known as aging signs. I intend on trying most, if not all as I age. There is as much vanity as science behind that goal. I want to look like I feel but mainly I want my biological age to be lower than my earthly age. This will guarantee a better health span as I age.

A year ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Christine Bishara, MD with From Within Medical for the podcast on the episode titled: Amazing discussion on weight loss, covid and all things microbiome with Dr. Christine Bishara! Dr. Bishara has a medical wellness practice in which she focuses on the mind-body and gut-brain axis to not only manage but also prevent disease. She has over 20 years of experience and “Dr. Bishara is also the creator of the Virtual Peel™– a medical grade face peel consultation that can be done at home through virtual step by step medical guidance so you can achieve the same results as an in office peel-but from the comfort of your own home.” Which made my choice for practitioner on the face peel a no brainer.

But, what is a face peel? Simply put a face peel is a chemical treatment that utilizes an acid to remove the most external layer(s) of skin.

What does a face peel help with?

The Virtual Peel™ is great for many skin conditions. It is a medical-grade peel so it’s very effective on:

• Hyperpigmentation. Whether that’s from years of sun exposure or just one summer’s worth, the Virtual Peel™ can help diminish sun spots and improve uneven skin tone.

• Lines and wrinkles. The peel stimulates collagen production and helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

• Acne. We have a specific acne formula that can be used for all types of acne.

• Skin rejuvenation. Because the peels contain brightening agents, they can be done for routine skin rejuvenation or to achieve glowing skin before a big event.

The cost of a virtual peel is between $250-$300 which is significantly lower than going to an office to get the treatment done. Yet it was priceless to just be home and to not have to go anywhere in order to get this done. The time it took me to do it was likely cut by 2/3rds since I didn’t have to drive anywhere. I can say I was a huge fan of that.

Because I know the effects of a good diet and skin I made sure to keep my diet clean (even cleaner than usual) the week prior to the treatment and followed a diet that would encourage collagen production the week after the treatment.
